My Story

Hi, I’m Jess. I am a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. I’m a wife and a mom. I am also a life coach.

To an outsider, I look accomplished, but inside, I have struggled with anxiety, phobia, stress, exhaustion, pregnancy loss, pathologic people pleasing and a sense of worthlessness. Even though my job is all about caring for others, I never made an effort to care for myself. I never thought I mattered.

As I approached my 40th birthday, a voice in my head said “this is not sustainable.” I knew I had to do something to change my life. So I did what any good surgeon would do, I went to work.

I worked on my diet…I went low carb, low low carb, high carb/low fat, no animals, some animals, all the animals, all the fat…round and round the cycle went. I lost weight, but I did not feel better.

I worked on exercise. I bought a Peloton and rode and rode. I started a jogging program and huffed and huffed. I did Pilates, weights, HIIT and on and on….I got a little more energy, but I still did not feel better.

I started sleeping more, which feels pretty good…but not good enough.

I cut back my hours, rearranged my schedule, even moved. Yes, I made my family move near the ocean…still something was missing.

I still felt like shit. I felt it in the core of my being. I would look in the mirror and punish myself with an endless track of negative self-talk. You’re a crappy mother, you’re a terrible wife, and oh yeah, here’s a goodie you’re weak. You don’t deserve to feel better.

Then a miracle happened. I discovered life coaching on a podcast on my commute -so moving my family to escape unhappiness resulted in a commute that ultimately saved my life.

Coaching confirmed what I knew all along - that the diets, exercise, sleep and busyness were just a small part of the problem. The root of my despair was in my brain and in my thinking.

Learning to manage your mind is a superpower, and it can change your life like it saved mine.
